US New Rules About TPS for Burma (Myanmar): What It Means

The U.S. government has decided to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for people from Burma (Myanmar).
This change will start on January 26, 2026.

Here is what this means in very simple words.

What Is TPS?

TPS is a temporary program that lets people from certain countries:

  • stay in the United States for a short time,

  • get permission to work,

  • and stay safe if their home country is too dangerous.

TPS does not give a green card.

Who Will Be Affected?

Only people from Burma who are living in the U.S. with TPS will be affected.

If you only have TPS, this change is about you.

Who Will NOT Be Affected?

People from Burma who already have:

  • a green card

  • U.S. citizenship

  • asylum or refugee status

  • another visa (like student or work visa)

These people are safe.
Nothing changes for them.

What Happens When TPS Ends?

When TPS ends on January 26, 2026:

  • People using only TPS will lose the right to stay under TPS.

  • They will also lose permission to work under TPS.

  • They must either:

    • leave the United States,

    • apply for another legal status, or

    • they may become undocumented if they do nothing.

Why Is This Happening?

The U.S. government says things in Burma have “gotten better.”
Because of this, they think people with TPS can return home safely.

Many groups do not agree with this, but the government has made its decision.

What Should People Do Now?

If someone has TPS, they should:

  1. Talk to an immigration lawyer right away.

  2. See if they can apply for another status.

  3. Keep their papers safe.

  4. Make a plan before January 26, 2026.

Important Reminder

If you have a green card, you are safe.
This change does not affect you.

Easy Summary

  • TPS for Burma ends on January 26, 2026.

  • Only people who use TPS are affected.

  • Green cards and other visas are not affected.

  • TPS holders may lose work and must find another status or leave the U.S.
